Format of 2017 UMAT exam
« on: January 04, 2017, 11:34:52 pm »

Hi,
I have a few questions regarding the format of UMAT.
1. How many questions are in each section of the exam?
2. Are the sections separated? As in, will be be given a set amount of time to do all the questions from all the section? Or will we do one section, and after time is up, move to another section?
3. How long is the UMAT exam?

I know this information is in the handbook somewhere, but it's really long and confusing.

Thanks!

Hey peanut! I'm not sure how many questions are in each section, but I know that the UMAT Exam is 3 hours long (plus 10 minutes reading time), and that you complete all sections in that 3 hours (non separated, you do it as you like as is my understanding) ;D hopefully someone a little more rehearsed can answer more specifically! :)

Yep Jamon was correct. But just to add on:
1. How many questions are in each section of the exam?
There are 134 questions in total - technically the number of questions per section can change every year (and every student gets a slightly different exam paper - questions are ordered differently and sometimes a few different trial questions are included but often that don't end up counting towards your score, but you have no idea which are trials and which are actual questions)
It is believed that there is approx:
Section 1: 48 questions
Section 2: 44 questions
Section 3: 42 questions

2. Are the sections separated? As in, will be be given a set amount of time to do all the questions from all the section? Or will we do one section, and after time is up, move to another section?
No they are not separated - in the past they were but now you are given exactly 3 hours to complete all 134 questions that are jumbled up into one exam paper. They will not tell you when to move on to each section and it's up to you whether you do the questions chronologically or spending time finding questions from each section and doing them by section

3. How long is the UMAT exam?
The exam itself is 3 hours long. However you are likely to be at the venue for up to 5 hours due to lining up, registering, finding your seat etc etc.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks mtse and jamon!

I've heard that in recent years, in section 1, ACER has been moving away from "logic" type questions (e.g. Bob lives in next to a red coloured house, Sally lives next to Tom, etc.) and moving more towards information or science-type questions (e.g. graphs, experiments, etc.). I know it is impossible to predict what this year's exam will be, but could anyone share some insight what each section was like the year they did it? (Preferably any 2016 UMAT takers) Did they match any prep courses (if you did any)?

Thanks!!

I'd like to hear about this too! Specifically how different 2015's exam was to 2016 as it would be good to have an indication of ACER's progress in devising/trialling new questions (especially since they no longer will be trials for us!)

I did the UMAT in 2015 and did use a prep course, and I'm also involved in UMAT training now. I know of people who have sat the UMAT every year as part of research for training companies etc who have passed on "predictions" for future exams. However in order not to defame or get any company into trouble, I'd much rather share this via PM.
In short, many companies haven't fully updated their practice materials yet so it is important for you to do extensive research before you choose a company to go with.
