Subjects to take in BSc for MD

Hey guys

I am starting the Bachelor of Science and in the process of enrolling for subjects. I'm confused on the particular subjects I need to be taking to satisfy the prerequisites for the MD. Can anyone help? And is it the same case as in Biomed where those subjects need to be taken in 2nd year or can they be done in 1st?

Also, would satisfying the prereqs for Melbourne's MD in turn satisfy all other Med schools in the country or do some have other requirements? I'm assuming Melbourne has the toughest prereqs here.

You need to have second year anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to satisfy the prerequisites. To be able to undertake those subjects you must complete the required first year subjects. You can't complete the subjects in first year as they are not offered. http://mdhs-study.unimelb.edu.au. Some people have suggested taking physics for a semester in the first year to help with the GAMSAT.

Anatomy: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/current/ANAT20006
Biochemistry: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/current/bcmb20002
Physiology: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/current/phys20008

The requirements for medicine are about the same across the country, as they try to maintain a standard between universities, I wouldn't say that Melbourne would be any more difficult than most other places.

Thanks a lot sweetcheeks, so would the prereqs in first year fill up my subjects for Year 1 or will I still need to take other subjects? If so, what is a popular option besides Physics (Physics does look beneficial tbh, as I do need to take the GAMSAT, but I'm a bit afraid as it isn't really my strong point). I quite frankly still don't get why the GAMSAT has Physics questions, it's an exam for Medicine entry.

You do 4 subjects a semester (one is usually breadth).
You have to do chemistry and biology in both semesters, so you have some room to do other subjects. Doing one semester of physics is probably useful, both for the GAMSAT and other studies.

The GAMSAT assesses 40% 1st year biology and chemistry, and 20% year 12 level physics, so if you aren't that into physics, it's not a big deal.
There are tonnes of blogs and stuff online that you can go through just to familiarise yourself with the content at your own pace, though if you feel as if you need the support, taking physics is recommended. Just remember that any subject you take impacts your average, which will ultimately be used as equal weight against the GAMSAT when the applications for interviews are released.
I should also note that the physics department has an open learning space which has tutors roaming around from 12-3pm (Laby ideas centre; ground floor of the David Caro Building) in the instance you ever require assistance in anything physics related  :)

Also you need a high GPA as well for the MD given the increasing competition for med school so be sure to do a major you enjoy as it allows you to maximise marks :)
