Selecting Subjects for Biomedicine

Hello Guys
I accepted my Bachelor of Biomedicine offer and I got up to the enrolling subjects section of the registration. I have no idea how the subject selection works in first year and having a massive trouble tying to select subjects. Can someone give me some guides to how to choose your subjects?

P.S I am aiming to do either MD or DDS through Biomedicine

Thank you

Hey mate. Congrats on your offer to do biomed.

The subjects you need to enrol in are as follows, for each semester.

Semester 1:
- Biomolecules and Cells
- Chemistry for Biomedicine
- Experimental Design and Data Analysis OR Mathematics for Biomedicine
- Breadth 1

Semester 2:
- Genes and Environment
- Physics 2: Life Sciences (because you've done VCE physics)
- Experimental Design and Data Analysis OR Mathematics for Biomedicine (opposite of sem 1)
- Breadth 2

To find breadth subjects: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/faces/htdocs/user/breadth/BreadthSearch.jsp
1. Select Bachelor of Biomedicine
2. Select level 1 subjects and then your preferred areas of study
3. Search

In your case, you should choose the standard pathway instead of Health Informatics or Bioeng, unless you plan to major in either. If you do the former, you can pick Foundations of Computing instead of EDDA.

Re: maths vs edda/when do I do which: you can do them in any order and there is no hard and fast rule. The faculty say you can do Maths for Biomed if you did VCE biol, but this is just to split the cohort ~50/50. Have a look at the handbook entries for the subjects to see which you might prefer. Tl;dr: edda is a statistics subject and maths for biomed covers unique maths that has biological/biomedical importance.

You don't need to worry about any other subjects that are mentioned on the study plan, such as Molecular and Cellular Biomedicine, Frontiers, Molecule to Malady, etc, as you will pick these later on in your degree. Similarly, your major is irrelevant for now unless you want to do Bioeng or Health informatics. Just worry about the subjects I mentioned above for now. Hope this helps.

P.s: the biomed students' society has set up a Facebook page for your cohort. Please let me know if you want a link and I can PM it to you :)

Thank you for that it is really helpful.
By the way will the core subjects automatically cover the prerequisites for MD/DDS or do I have to be conscious of my subjection selection to ensure that the prerequisites are covered?

By the way I would appreciate the link to the Facebook page :)

In Biomedicine, all of the core subjects cover the pre-reqs that you need to do med and dentistry. Similarly, the cores will also prepare you for the GAMSAT, should you choose to sit it. You basically have free reign over what you do with your selectives and major sequence assuming that your timetable isn't moved around by exchange.

I've PM'd you a link to the group. Have a nice day!

Hey guys,
I'm doing Biomed as well and was wondering if someone could help me out with this aspect of the breadth/selective subjects. When it comes to enrolling in breadth, I get this message:

All of the following rules must be satisfied:
Between 50 and 75 points of Breadth : 50 credit points must be selected
No more than 37.5 points of level 1 Breadth : 37.50 credit points may be selected
Between 25 and 50 points of Discipline subjects : 25 credit points must be selected
At least 12.5 points of level 2 Discipline subjects : 12.50 credit points must be selected
No more than 50 points of level 1 subjects : 50 credit points may be selected

I have no experience with enrolling in any uni subjects before so I'm really confused.. How many subjects do I need to pick? Are they only breadth subjects? Only level 1? If anyone could help me it would be super appreciated.
Thanks!  :)

You can have 4-6 breadths. If you decide to go with 4, you need to choose 2 selectives. For your selectives, you can only have max 1 lv1 subject.
During second year you have 2 slots for selectives even if you go for 6 breadths.
I went with GENE20001 principles of genetics and calculus 2(lv1).
2015-2017: Bachelor of Biomedicine (Neuroscience)
2018: Doctor of Medicine (Withdrawn)
2019: Bachelor of Commerce (Actuarial Studies?)

Sorry but what's the diff between breadths and selectives? I'm so lost  :-X

for example, if someone is doing biomed/science, then science subjects can't be taken as breadth but can be taken as selectives. commerce, arts subjects can be taken as breadths.
