half yearlies prep

So it's nearly time for our prep for half yearlies. I have already kept in mind that I will start my plan of attack next week as I will need to catch up on a lot of work I have fallen behind in. How should I prep for the half yearlies? I have kept in mind doing doing practice exam questions, focusing on weaknesses and doing past papers. For english I am going to write multiple super good 15/15 essays which cover the whole rubric and then start doing practice essay questions. Is there anything else I should cover?

It sounds like your plan of attack is good! Remember to set aside extra time to mark your practice questions and exams, and to get feedback on your essays. Very easy in all the rush to just keep working and never stop to actually evaluate yourself properly ;D

Hey strawberriesarekewl :) Yes definitely your first plan of attack should be to catch up on any content you have missed or aren't feeling 100% about yet! When it comes to english, are you thinking about memorising those multiple essays? Because I think that'll be a bit tricky, and maybe not the best use of your time. If you are worried about the broad range of things they could ask maybe memorising essay scaffolds instead?

I noticed that you're studying Yeats for module B (I did T.S. Eliot, but i'd assume study wise it'd be pretty similar.) Instead of writing out multiple full length essays and trying to memorise those (a bit risky as you can never be 100% sure what the question will be), I'd probably be more inclined to write broad, adaptable essay scaffolds on each poem specifically, as you never know what poem they may specify (if they specify at all!) Look at Yeats oeuvre and find maybe 3 or 4 solid and consistent thematic concerns, and then work out how each poem relates. (I hope that made sense). A linking table would also be a good idea, so how does each poem specifically link to the other poems, not just thematically, but also in the techniques they use etc. etc. (I used this a lot more for modern, but I can defs see how it would have worked in english also!)

Hope this helps! Good luck with you exams  :D

Hey Suddods

For english I am planning to have multiple good essays (all covering the rubric) and practicing them to essay questions. If I had to do any last minute study I would probably just practice writing thesis statements and topic sentences (instead of writing whole 40 minute essays) and memorising all prepared paragraphs which have covered most (if not all) of the discovery rubric

I am not doing yeats this term, I am doing it next term. I am just asking to get myself somewhat prepared for term 2

Thank you Suddods and Jamon

Excited for you to study Yeats! I think this was my favourite module. Happy to chat about Yeats with you when you're up to it :)

This has all been so useful! Thank you! I can already feel a progression in my attitude towards the HSC through the use of this awesome website!

Thank you for everything you guys do!

Mary
Hey!
I did the HSC last year (2017) and my 10 units were English Advanced, English Extension 1, English Extension 2, Legal Studies, Maths and Studies of Religion 2. I achieved my ATAR aim of over 90!

I loved tutoring and running essay writing workshops (privately and at InFlow Education) so much that I decided to study a Bachelor of Secondary Education, majoring in English and minoring in Maths!

If you're thinking about tutoring, let me know x
