Advice on learning vocab/kanji/grammar?
(1/1)
SailorJelly:
Hey, I was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on how they studied for vocabulary/kanji/grammar.
Did you use specific apps, textbooks and/or have specific techniques on studying them?
Also how did you get better at listening throughout the year?
Thanks!
AngelWings:
Hey there SailorJelly!
I actually used Quizlet quite a bit in VCE and beyond. (I did Japanese as my elective at uni for the last two years.) I would also recommend you check out these helpful links from AN:
- Links to Various Japanese Resources
- This Japanese verb list from Jibba
- Tips on Memorising Vocabulary
... and some more external websites that may be useful:
- Anki - makes flashcards
- How to improve your Japanese (blog entry, credit to the writer)
- Duke University Kanji Site
- Learn101 Japanese Grammar
- Erin's Challenge (Japanese Learning Website)
That list should help you learn and study vocab, kanji and grammar.
As for listening, the obvious answer is a lot of practise! During VCE, I had Saturday mornings off and would go and watch the Japanese morning news on television (it used to be on SBS 2 at 11-11:35am in Melbourne*), and on rare occasions, listen to the radio station it advertised at the end of the news broadcast at night. Any other simple Japanese news site will do the same trick. Other methods are watching dramas, which Jibba describes a few here, and doing listening practise with the following companies/ state equivalents of VCE:
- Leading Edge
- SACE Japanese Continuers (South Australian equivalent)
- HSC Japanese Continuers (NSW equivalent)
* Just checked if it still is on. (It is, though the channel is now renamed to SBS Viceland.) It broadcasts NHK Japanese news daily at said time. It was often too difficult for VCE level (i.e. you ended up understanding the gist of it) and required a preliminary knowledge of current events on your part, but was still great for learning vocab and revising some forms of grammar. I would only recommend this as a secondary resource.
