I used The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, it's a short story :) A few other texts I've seen people use:
- The Necklace (short story) by Guy de Maupassant
- Father and Child (poem) by Gwen Harwood
- Heart of Darkness (novella) by Joseph Conrad - I think this is good if you're talking about Caliban!
