This is a topic which has sparked debate and violence for millenia...

Is a hot dog a sandwich?

I'll start: yes. It is a filling (the hot dog) with bread on both sides (the bun).

Surely not srs?

The Hotdog is a cousin of the sandwich, part of the Roll genus of bread species ;)

A sandwich is made of two (or more, if you're snobbish) separate pieces of bread with filling between them. So clearly hot dogs are not sandwiches.

These aren't mutually exclusive.

If you get a hot dog and place it between two pieces of bread, is it noth both a hot dog and a sandwich?

It's not exactly either tbh.

It's not a sandwich because the filling is supposed to be spread out evenly/flatly, and it just isn't a hot dog because you have to wrap a sausage in bread for that.

Anyone who eats a sausage with two pieces of bread, unless they've sliced cold sausage, is a bogan and I hereby relegate them to purgatory eternally.

Using my trusty pal google I found this definition. A sandwich is an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with a filling between them, eaten as a light meal. So, since hot dogs typically consist of one piece of bread, it isn't a sandwich.

Where do you stand on one piece of bread folded over? ;D

You know what?

In the broader scheme of things, a hot dog is definitely sandwichy. Like, it's absolutely more sandwichy than, say, a chair.

That's what you were asking, right?

Okay but like, OP's argument was that if you had it like this:

These aren't mutually exclusive.

If you get a hot dog and place it between two pieces of bread, is it noth both a hot dog and a sandwich?

So that's:

BREAD
sausage
BREAD

Then that's a sandwich,  claims the OP. Two breads, one sausage.

Y'all are saying a sausage isn't a sandwich becuase there's only one piece of bread, but OP is saying "fk u guys" and putting his sausage between two distinct slices of bread.

My contention is that EVEN IF you do put a sausage in between two pieces of bread, it's STILL not a sandwich, because the surface area/width of the sausage hardly constitutes a filling. Like, it's not like if you put a BBQ'd patty in between bread and you've got yourself a rissole sandwich, because a  rissole actually takes up a fair chunk of the bread's surface area, but when all you've got is a stupid meat stick and some sauce, it's a downright offence to the nation to go ahead and call it a sandwich.

But even if you did just use a hot-dog bun. It's not a sandwich, because it's a bloody hot dog. Which is definitionally not a sandwich....... because it's a hot dog!

Bro, you're reading it wrong.

A hot dog isn't just a sausage, because, well, that's just a sausage! A hot dog is a sausage in a hot dog bun. So really, the OP was arguing:

BREAD
SAUSAUGE IN HOT DOG BUN
BREAD

And I think we can all agree that that's just a whole lot of carbs.

But definitely a sandwich (just a fkn weird one).

Technically speaking, a hot dog is a type of sausage. So when asked if a hot dog is a sandwich, the answer is unequivocally no, it is a form of sausage originating from Frankfurt. It just so happens that when we want to eat or order a hot dog, the customary method of serving is inside bread roll, but 'hot dog' ISN'T the name of the whole bread+sausage+sauce, hot dog just refers to the meat, with the bread and sauce being how it is customarily served. There are places where you can order a 'hot dog' and all you get is a hot dog skewered on a stick (at festivals and stuff). so i think the question itself is flawed. if you ask someone whats the different between a bunnings snag and a hot dog, the difference is the meat, not the bread/how it is served. so hot dog definitely just refers to the meat, so the question of whether a hot dog is a sandwich is mute.
