1/2 English and 3/4 English

As a current year 11 studying English language, I may want to do 3/4 English in year 12 but I don't know if I should having not done 1/2 mainstream English this year. I want to know what is the difference between 1/2 and 3/4 MAINSTREAM English and will it affect me if I don't do 1/2 English? Thanks!

1/2 and 3/4 mainstream English are really similar. In units 1/2 English I basically had the same assessments and learnt the same stuff is a more basic form, but with different texts. So, you may be slightly disadvantaged if you transfer into 3/4 English. However at my school some of the best English students are ones that transferred out of literature and English language, so you can definitely do well if you transfer to mainstream English, despite the disadvantage.

I did literature 1/2 last year and then transferred to English 3/4 this year and it's fine. Doing English 1/2 really offers you no advantage other than practicing the format of the English tasks, but since 3/4 is such a step up they generally reteach you how to write the different types of essays to a better standard. In fact I found useful to be able to bring some of the unique things I learnt in lit into my English essays, which I'm sure is also possible with English Language. I'd almost say lit has prepared me better for the standard needed to do well in English 3/4 than English 1/2, which I'm sure can be said for English language since they are both technically 'extension' streams.
