Exam misconduct

Hey guys,

Today I went into a exam with my phone in my jacket. I completely forgot about it since I was already running late and my jacket was pretty loose and since I had all kinds of stationery and tissues and wallet etc. I didn't notice it. Near the end of the exam I asked to go to the toilet and when I was asked to show my pockets I realised I had my phone in there but by then it was too late. I know I'm fucked but I just wanna know if anyone else has gone through a similar process. What happened in the end in regards to your result? Should I send an email to my subject coordinator or just wait until the uni contacts me?

I'm really sorry to hear about what happened. Unfortunately it is quite a serious thing when phones come out - I'm not going to beat around the bush, this could end quite badly. What I recommend is getting into contact with UMSU (your student union at Melbourne), and they should have someone you can talk to. Tbh, they're going to be far more help than anybody on here can be. Just let them know that it was definitely an accident, be prepared to give up your phone and sign a stat dec so they can prove it was in no way used for the exam, and it might turn out better than you'd think.

Hi, one of my friends got into a similar situation last semester, she forgot to put her phone under the table and didn't actually turn it off (she thought she did before entering REB but it turns out just being locked instead of being turned off). What happened next is you would get an email regarding this incident shortly (probably during next week after all exams are done) and they would ask you to attend a student discipline committee hearing to explain the whole situation, and your results for this subject will be withheld before the committee make a decision. My friend didn't tell us explicitly what happened in that meeting but she said as long as you are being honest and tell them you did not intend to cheat then the outcome should be fine. Her result was released a couple days later and there's no penalty applied to her. Hope your case could resolve well too.
