Hi! I'm doing viscom 3/4 this year and rn I'm surveying people on which logo they like best so I can pick a concept for refinement. It's two questions and if you could do it that would be super helpful! also leave feedback if you can :) thanks

Before I do the actual survey, can you please describe your brief and what it is about. Then I can make a better desicion (I've done Visual Communication and design so I do know about different briefs and requirements. You must follow your design brief which is why I asking here.

^Definitely a good point. I just responded based purely on aesthetics, but the brief would definitely help.

CLIENT:
Mandelbrot Moreau is the founder of Cirque des Rêves, an Australian entertainment company established in 1999. Translating to Circus of Dreams, Cirque des Rêves is a highly successful circus based in Docklands, Melbourne. Open only at night, it aims to provide its customers with an experience out of the ordinary; a night of magic. The circus consists of several tents, each with its own distinctive attraction, and customers are invited to make their way around the circus as they please, similar to a festival. It is currently touring Australia before travelling internationally for the first time due to high demand. The unique circus, heavily inspired by the setting of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, is looking to further expand and develop their identity in order to stay current and modern while still maintaining their image.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Cirque des Rêves is designed to appeal to those with a sense of adventure and love for magic. It aims to include all genders and ethnicities from a middle to high socioeconomic status. The age demographic is generally all ages; targeting 8-15 year olds and adults who are ‘young at heart’. More accurately, it appeals to families. In their spare time when they are not at school, the younger audience can be found them holed up in libraries, having sleepovers with their friends, and enjoying the sunshine with their siblings. These children are bookworms with a liking for fantasy novels, such as the Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia series. They also enjoy being creative whether it is writing, drawing, or painting. The adults, on the other hand, are educated, slightly old-school, and lovers of jazz music, good food, and books, being avid readers themselves. When they are not at their professional jobs, they are hosting dinner parties, spending quality time with their children, and going to art galleries and museums.

Constraints and expectation:
The logo/brand identity must be creative and original, mirroring the circus’ public image. It must also include one of black, white, or red as its dominant colour. The fact that it will be on a range of various contexts, from stickers to t-shirts, must be taken into consideration. Therefore, it must be resizable so it can be applied to various products. Moreover, apart from t-shirts, merchandise must be genderless and not attract a specific gender. Furthermore, if t-shirts are to be designed, they are to be aimed towards the younger audience. Lastly, it must be completed by the 1st of September.

NEED: new logo/brand identity

Thank you!

I liked #1 and #2 in the survey (voted for #2). Given your target audience, I reckon these are your best options.

What do you think? :)

Whereas I quite precisely thought "oh, #2 is the one I like least, imma vote #3" (based on aesthetics).

Here I go. Given your brief, your best options will be #1 or #2. The reason is that these logos really communicate the night circus part of the brief and more accurately captures the fantasy interest of the target audience. The other two logos do not communicate this very well, so they should be eliminated right away.

About aesthetics, aesthetics is nothing of the logo does not fulfill the brief, but when you have narrowed you logos to the ones that do fulfill the brief, then you should consider aesthetics. After all, you get marks less for the best looking logo in VisComm but more marks for fulfilling the design brief.
