Quote based essay questions

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone had any advice specifically for dealing with essay questions where quotes are given (particularly for national study and personality studies) (I do Russia 1917-1941 + Trotsky)
We've never been tested on them before, but I know they do and probably will come up so how do I approach it? Do i have to directly quote the quote (haha), do I have to challenge it, do I treat it like I would a quote in an English essay?
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Generally they're "to what extent" deals - so you're basically evaluating how true it is (can be mixed, like true in some aspects but not in others) and then backing it up with evidence. You can challenge it or agree, typically they use quotes that can be agreed with in large part but do what's easiest based on your knowledge as you're being marked on how you support your argument - not whether it's right or wrong. Of course if it's completely wrong it'll be hard to back up.

Typically in the first line of the introduction I'd mention the quote directly or paraphrase it so my argument is clear. Then I'd try to refer to this viewpoint repeatedly in the body and again in the conclusion.

Hope that helps somewhat.
