Monash Medicine or Melbourne Biomed

Hey guys,

In the hypothetical that my umat and atar score allows me to choose between monash medicince and melbourne biomedicine guaranteed entry (which i hope to use as a platform into medicine), which one should I choose? I am aware that they now both give MD and Monash is 2 years shorter but apparently the prestige at Melbourne is better. I am worried that if I go to Monash, my degree will be seen as inferior to someone from Melbourne. In other words, does international universities and employers see Melbourne as notably better or are they more or less the same in terms of future employability and future propspects of studying overseas (hopefully england or usa)?

I am in year 12 this year and I realise this may be a bit early to think about this but I am just curious.

Thanks!
PS. How guaranteed is Melbourne guaranteed entry (to avoid gamsat)? If I am willing to pay full fee and keep my grades up, is entry into melb med still really competitive?

I suspect that some of the stuff you've heard about Melbourne's prestige and how employers view Melbourne graduates compared to Monash graduates is overblown.

The reality is that every domestic student in this state is guaranteed a job after med school. Once you've started that job, your med school is largely irrelevant. So I highly doubt going to Monash as opposed to Melbourne will really make any difference to be honest

To add to what vox has said above, you should apply for the university based on their areas of expertise/specialty and how they align with your interests, their access to hospitals which you may prefer for placements, course structure, teaching method etc. Also, both degrees are at the end of the day accredited by the AMC, so will be valid for applying to practice in countries like the US.

From their website, the minimum ATAR for full fee guaranteed entry is 99.00, with a minimum WAM of 75%. Although, you are still required to pass the MMI.

Beware ATAR & UMAT alone don't give you Monash, even with 99.5 & 95%ile if you bomb the interview you still can miss out. So apply to them both, and interstate as well for more chances. Once you get their offers in your pocket in January you have over a month to ask & contemplate which one to choose.

Thank you everyone. What you guys have said has been very helpful!
Just another question, how hard is it too pass the gamsat and MMI? Does full fee make passing the MMI much easier?

Thank you

The requirements for the Full Fee guaranteed spots are 99+ ATAR, 75+ WAM. keeping your grades above 75 isn't easy but I wouldn't say it is very difficult either. However, it means you can't slack off as you will still have to work decently hard to get those grades. Even if you do get this guarantee, I would still advise you to do the GAMSAT as it means you can still apply for other universities if your interview doesn't work out and if you do well enough, you can get a CSP place saving you a heap of money. The GAMSAT isn't an easy test and most students have to prepare in advance for it.
Ultimately, if you get offered a spot at Monash Med and medicine is what you really want to do, I would take it. The uncertainty of 3 year undergraduate and the chance to get rejected even with a 'guarantee' at the interview stage is probably not worth any other intangibles. Employability wise, there is little difference if you stay in Victoria / Australia.
When it comes to studying overseas, Medicine is probably the worst degree for it. Exchange programs are very limited and finishing your degree here does not license you to practice medicine overseas. You would probably only be able to go overseas to study if you did medical research after your medicine degree.
