HELP NEEDED. PLEASE.

Hi guys! My class has been doing language analysis for a while now, and I think I've been doing pretty well, but in my last english exam (end of semester 1) I got an unsatisfying result. In the feed back section my teacher wrote "reader effect too shallow/generic/vague", and I've been getting this for a while now but this time it really effected my grade & and it is really bugging me. So I want to know what I can do to improve the reader effect part of the language analysis, what I should be asking myself while analysing reader effect..and so on.

Any type of help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Can you give a example of what you wrote? Then I can tell you what you need to add :)

giving an example would be great

but from what I'm reading I think you may be using those effects on the read that are just standard i.e. found in the textbook and study material. What you want to be doing is getting into the readers percieved thoughts at that right moment i.e. relating specifically to the issue at hand not just some generic statement like "positions the author to agree". I could be way off so please provide an example.

Thanks Sine  ;D

Hey! So I think one of the best ways to make sure your reader effects are not too generic or vague is to read the article (or part of the article) to yourself and put the emotion and expression into it that you imagine the writer would be trying to convey. Then think about how this makes you, as a reader feel. The specific effect on the reader (rather than a generic 'persuades the reader to agree with the author's viewpoint) is going to be very specific to the technique. For example, if the writer uses repetition, the specific effect may be to make the point very obvious to the reader - to make it stand out as important. Another example would be the use of an appeal to fear and insecurity, which, in a specific context relating to children's safety, may position parents to feel protective of their children, and thus want to take action against anything challenging their child's safety. So each individual technique is having a specific effect, that is slightly different to others (although some techniques may be used to the same effect), but they all ultimately work to persuade the reader to agree with the author - you just have to tease out specific effects. I hope this makes sense and helps a bit!

Hi DipsetForever,

The way I teach my students is to separate it into two questions: (1) what's the initial thought or feeling that the reader is supposed to have, and (2) why would the author want the reader to feel or think this way? I've got a video demonstrating how I'd analyse a visual in a paragraph if you're interested (https://youtu.be/fWSB5QzKD5Y). It's not exactly the reader effect from a technique/device, but you should be analysing them in fairly similar ways.

Hope that helps! =)
