HELP!!! Unit 3/4 Methods

Hi Everyone,

I am currently in Year 11 studying Unit 1/2 Methods and i am struggling quite a bit! I am mostly scrapping through with 40%'s however i have received a 64% and 72% in probability. Coming from a background with a lack of knowledge and understanding in algebra and graphing i struggle with answering questions when i am faced with problems i do not understand. I have put Methods 3/4 has a subject preference next year and i have no appeal to move into Further as i would like to study BioMed or Nutrition due to my interest and success in Biology, Physical Education and Health. I NEED SOME TIPS on the best ways some people survived unit 3/4 and got beyond a raw study score of 25.

Thanks in Advance, Joel :D

Hi Joel,

I haven't done methods yet, but I would suggest reading through the examples in your textbook so that they can aid you in solving the problems you struggle with, and write out all of the steps you used to solve them.
Also, teachers are your best resource! Ask your methods teacher for help. There is also the methods question thread here on AN.
In your summary book, write down errors to learn from your mistakes, and make sure you never get them wrong again! :)
Just for clarification, are you planning to do Biomedicine at Melbourne Uni or Biomedical Science at a different uni?

If you do Biomedical Science at Monash, you can take physics to satisfy the maths prerequisite.
Quote from: Monash
Units 3 & 4: a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods (any), Specialist Mathematics or Physics

Good luck! :D

I’m currently doing methods right now, so I might not be the best person to give advice. I feel like for maths, the best way to really improve is to do heaps of different types of questions. I recommend looking through the examples in the textbook before attempting a question and try to understand the method. Then, you should attempt it yourself and if you get it wrong, look at the worked solutions and try to understand why you got it wrong and repeat the question until you get it correct. Like the person above, I feel like if you’re struggling, you should definitely ask your teacher. For algebra, practice makes perfect and in my opinion there’s no shortcut to refining these skills. For graphing, you’ll need to kind of memorise the general shapes of every graph and apply them to the questions. It helps to understand why the graphs have their certain shapes. In my opinion, maths is one of those subjects where to improve, exposing yourself to heaps of relevant questions and understanding them generally works.

Hey! So I think for methods, or maths in general, looking over the content so you understand it, and then practicing applying your knowledge by doing questions is probably one of the best ways to go about it. Sometimes some short summaries of each topic may help you - making a sheet of the essential formulas and concepts you need to know, and then attempting questions after this, or as you go. A summary can help because it kind of makes you learn a concept, in order to write a succinct version of it (if that makes sense!), so you could give that a shot and see if it helps :)
