Hi, just out of general curiosity, how many units do most people do for the HSC? What have you found more common within your school cohort? Thanks

i do 10! i go to a catholic school, so there's the option to do the non-atar catholic studies, or the atar studies of religion 1 or 2. most people i know do 11, a select few do 12, and there's people who do 10.
HSC 2017: English (Standard) // Mathematics // Modern History // Legal Studies // Business Studies
2018-2022: B International Studies/B Media (PR & Advertising) @ UNSW

Hey! I do 12 units personally, and at my school (public co-ed) I would say around 50% do 10 units, 40% do 12 units and only 10% do an odd amount e.g. 11 or 13

I do 13 units (Advanced English, Ancient, Extension History, Music 1, Hospitality, General Maths, Legal) :)
Majority of the people I know do 10 or 12 although there are a few other people who also do 11 or 13.

this is the exact same at my school. they said the people that do best do 12 units, but they didn't have any stats for 13 units. if i could go back doing 13 units would have been a good idea.

I do 10 units just because we are a small school and we don't have enough teachers for all the other subjects. Our school doesn't trust anyone to do 12 units for the HSC so they make us drop down to 10 units. I honestly find this so stupid because I feel that people who do 12 units perform better and have a backup. Although since we are a catholic school, some do 11 units because of SOR 1.
Which will hold greater rule over you? Your fear or your curiosity?

Most people in my year do 10, including me now. At the end of year 11 our careers advisor was telling us all to drop units but didn't force it. Most people listened, I and a small portion of others didn't (especially cause our careers advisor doesn't actually have good advice) but thoug out the year most of us dropped to 10. The extension kids tend to do 11. I only know one person personally doing 12 and there's only one person in the whole year doing 13.

2018: Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies at University of Sydney

-- need a tutor for any of the subjects listed above?? I reckon I'm the girl! Just message me on ATAR notes or here--

That is so funny that your school (and some others I have seen above too) have wanted students going to 10! My school literally grills everyone who wants to drop a subject, and whilst many are able to, some get turned off by the process and avoid the conflict! I was even grilled by a deputy because I wanted to drop from 14 to 12! ;D

I wonder if doing the compressed curriculum is why, cause it seems it might be easier to juggle 3 subjects at a time so your school is like "keep going" where as since mine isn't compressed cirriculum it can get hard to juggle 6+ subjects at a time and they don't want us stressed about that. That's my guess.

Yesss at the moment that’s a factor for sure, but even prior to us beginning compacted (cause it has only been like this for a few years) even then they wanted everyone to do a full 12

I'd say the majority of people in my cohort are doing more than 10 units; usually 12 but there are a few others, like me, doing 11 :)

I personally do 14 units but that's quite unusual at my school. There are a couple of people that do 11 units and the remainder are split roughly evenly between 10 and 12.
2017 HSC: English Advanced // English Extension 1 // English Extension 2 // Mathematics Extension 1 // Mathematics Extension 2 // Physics // Chemistry // Economics

LAT 2016: 100th percentile // UMAT 2017: 99th percentile
