Quotes - Identity and belonging

I thought it'd be a good idea to make a list of quotes which relate to identity and belonging.

I'll start: "Tell me whom you love and I will tell you who you are." - French poet Arsene Houssaye.

Oh and also does anyone know some quotes that relate to belonging (to a group etc) except for John Donne's "No man is an island etc..." because that is overly used >.>

It's not that most people don't want to help, but sometimes people want to keep certain ideas that they have gone to a lot of trouble refining or finding to themselves. It isn't to hard to see why, when your trying to make your essay stand out from everyone else, you don't really want to go pasting your most valuable resources on the internet for them to be seen and used by all. To make matters worse, it really is quite annoying when you put in a whole lot of effort finding quotes or evidence only for it to be copy pasted by someone else, meaning you did all the work and they reap all the rewards. This is usually enough to dissuade most people from sharing their 'best' resources on the internet.

With that said, here are a few nice quotes I'll let slip:

“We need others. We need others to love and we need to be loved by them. There is no doubt that without it, we too, like the infant left alone, would cease to grow, cease to develop, choose madness and even death.”

“The hardest battle you're ever going to fight is the battle to be just you.”

“The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don't let them put you in that position.”

They were all said by Leo F. Buscaglia

Quotes 2 and 3 kind of contradict one another, but your examiner will never have to know (unless you go and put them both in the same essay for some reason).

I like to collect quotes (of mostly irrelevant things) so here are a few, but I don't know how relevant and useful these actually are.

"Often, it’s not about becoming a new person, but becoming the person you were meant to be, and already are, but don’t know how to be." - Heath L. Buckmaster (Box of Hair: A Fairy Tale)

"Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I've ever known." - Chuck Palahniuk (Invisible Monsters)

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." - Oscar Wilde

"Time is the enemy of identity" - Michael Moorcock

"In contrast to how a child belongs in the world, adult belonging is never as natural, innocent, or playful.  Adult belonging has to be chosen, received, and renewed.  It is a lifetime's work." - John O'Donohue (Eternal Echoes: Celtic Reflections on Our Yearning to Belong)

"Our bodies know they belong; it is our minds that make our lives so homeless." - John O'Donohue (Eternal Echoes: Celtic Reflections on Our Yearning to Belong)

"We have to overcome the idea that everyone is the same." - Thumbsucker

"Don't act like somebody you're not. You do that long enough, you'll forget you were acting. And so will everyone else" - The Chumscrubber

And just for kicks:
"Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You." - Dr. Seuss.
2011-13: Bachelor of Science (Pharmacology) @ University of Melbourne

That reminded me of this one:

"You ought to be thankful, a whole heaping lot, for the places and people you're lucky you're not!" - Dr Seuss

a tiny bit off topic in the sense im not providing a quote. But I actually don't mind context, it is sort of like philosophy  but like your simply discussing IDEAS. All these quotes are really intelligent, and insightful. You can expand on them so much, and really get into the mindset. I like how we are writing about such a broad topic, of issues which apply to each one of us.

Just my thoughts.
