Hey Mr West!

Congrats on applying for the leadership role - that's really great! :)

Re: the speech, I think an important thing to decipher is probably what your angle is. Like, are you trying to be funny? Serious? Comprehensive? Relatable? A combination of things?

Once you have a clear image, I find it's usually easier to get things flowing. My general advice, though, is probably to be a) genuine, and b) specific. Genuine insofar as not just saying things because you think it's what people want to hear; people are smart, and they'll probably see through it. And specific insofar as giving particular examples of what you're interested in implementing, how you would lead, and how those things would positively affect those voting.

With a combination of those two things above, enthusiasm will shine through, and I'm sure you'll be great. :)

What are your thoughts?

Hey J41!

that sounds great! i feel my angle will be a combination of things. i want to be serious and show the teachers that i am prepared for the responsiblity,  but i also want to be humourous at parts to stop the boys from falling asleep.

thanks

Yeah, cool - that sounds a good balance. :)

I don't know if this is the best way to do things necessarily, but I also found that starting and ending with a bit of humour was a good way to go. Get the laughs in early, finish on a high - but then use the crux of the speech to actually deliver your message.

Be succinct and have one 'main point'. I've listened to sooooo many speeches that are convoluted with references to school values and quotes from random people that have little relevance to the context. Yuck.

And don't have cringey humour - puns and light jabs at the principle/your opponents are the safest.

It depends on what style suits you.
If you aren't well-known, you can make a joke how "My name is Mr West, in case you didn't know not that I blame since there are *insert approx student number in your year/school*.

You can also take self-depreciate by saying "How I'm not surprised you don't know who I am, I'm not someone you think would do this".

I argued though that it isn't really the content, but rather the presentation. I think of doing a speech like acting or show, people don't remember what you say, but how you say it.

But as Joesph has stated be genuine. Do not be someone you aren't because we tell you to do something a certain way. Everyone has their own individual quirks and tendencies when doing a speech.
Jack of all trades, master of none.
Hence why i'm in all these different threads and boards.
