Literature is not about structure...It's about style
iamdan08:
When i wrote close analysis' of texts i tended to have a "smallish" intro that i used to help get myself started in writing the essay. I also finished with a short conclusion. I don't think a set structure is essential and i have seen brilliant and high scoring essays that have different degrees of structure (i.e. intro, body paragraphs and conclusion).
As for quotes, i tried to stick to the extracts but if there was another quote that i knew which supported something in the passages, then i would use it. I didn't however go crazy memorising a heap of quotes.

Great advice, thanks guys, hopefully i can apply this to my literature essays next year.

The best is not to have a distinctive structure, just dive in straight to the point and back it up with evidence :) In the exam, be sure to use "In passage 1/2/3" to refer to them :P
