UoM High Distinction

Hello everyone,

What are assignments and exams (any assessment) like in University for Commerce subjects? What is the relative difficulty in obtaining high distinction marks?

If you could relate your response to anything high school related it would be helpful. My understanding is that it is "different". Feel free to answer the gist of my questions if you don't want to respond directly to what I've asked.

My plan is go in with no concrete expectations; as well as, a humble mindset. However, any information to help qualify my goal setting would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Eventful

Mod edit: Changed title to create distinction between university + the high school.

to be fair its pretty easy to do well in commerce if you do the work. The effort required to get you a 90 atar in vce will get you an average of 80+ in commerce EASILY (anything over 80 is called a H1 (First class honours)). The problem with uni and commerce in particular is you get caught up in other things. internships/society committments/extra curriculars (which you usually need to get good jobs) and socializing take a chunk out of your study time. my average is in the mid 70's which is a H2/Second class honours (other universities call this a distinction) and i really do very little work until exam time. I rarely go to lectures and rarely went to my tutorials. i didnt even watch them at home I just study 24/7 in the final week of class and the 1 week of swotvac and do fine. of course I am regretting it right now as i procrastinate for my last exam, but its a pretty common trend amongst commerce students. so if you consistently do the amount of work that it would take to get a 95 atar to get into commerce at melbourne, you will do VERY well. the only issue might be if you dont 'get it' and commerce isnt for you. ive known alot of people who did alot of sciences or humanities in high school without business subjects and pick commerce, and despite the fact therye REALLY smart and got super high atars of 98+ they fail commerce subjects because the ideas and stuff like that just don't click. I think you'll be fine though as most people are but that does happen on occasion.

good luck
