Hey guys,
So yesterday everyone found out their ATARs and I was extremely pleased with mine. However, the only issue is I'm not sure whether or not I want to go to Melbourne or Monash due to receiving an Access scholarship from Melbourne and the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for Excellence from Monash. I really have two passions in both a biology related field and a data/computer science related field. Mainly want to know what any of your experiences are with each of these related fields at Melbourne as I'm being put off of going to Melbourne due to them not having IBL for comp science. I would be doing a comp science/science double degree at Monash and at Melbourne I'm not too sure at the moment. What's the flexibility like at Melbourne with having both computer science and biol major subjects in your degree i.e. can you fit it into all your units?? What are classes like at Melbourne in these subjects? Competition and social attitude of students? And generally your thoughts on the whole situation?
Thanks to anyone that replies :)

I haven't been to either university so I don't have any personal experience that can help you, but it may be worth checking out the computational biology major at the University of Melbourne if you haven't already, it sounds like it would suit your interests nicely.

Yeah I had a look at that awhile ago and just then. Imo it’s not something I want to do, I really just like the idea of AI and machine learning research predominant in data science. Main reason for not wanting to do computational biology is that the subjects don’t have a particular flavour or resonance towards me. Thanks for the insight though man :) just wondering where you’ll be going next year and what you wanted to do??

I'd go to Monash, based on what you are saying.

Especially in the IT/CS industry, experience has a higher priority than qualification. You need a competitive edge. IBL/industry projects provide unique networking opportunities in the relevant specialisation that a degree itself barely provides.

Unfortunately a bachelor's degree on its own is not enough. If you received a position other than helpdesk/support based on just a degree, you'd be one of the few.
