Breadth Choices

Hey guys,

I’m in the midst of researching my choices of breadth so that I can finalise my study plan in the coming days. The predicament that I’ve come across is that I’ve noticed certain subjects have pre-reqs - for example, a load of maths based subjects are required to complete an introduction to actuarial studies (a level 1 breadth). So does this mean it’s impossible to undertake these subjects if we don’t have the required uni subjects, or are breadth students exempt?

The reason I ask is because it pops up as available breadth to undertake; however, I believe you can’t take the math subjects required as a Biomed student...

Hopefully that made sense  :D

Hey there!  :)
Unfortunately, breadth subjects are not exempt to prerequisites and co-requisites. To complete Introduction to Actuarial Studies, you must have at least completed Calculus 2 as a prerequisite or as a co-requisite (i.e. studying it concurrently).

If you're studying Biomed though, you can't complete Calc 2 as a breadth. However, my friend last year was in Biomed and somehow studied Linear Algebra so there may be some waivers or exemptions to this, however you may have to look into it (Linear Algebra is also a pre-req for Actuarial Studies).
However, if all else fails and you're interested in maths-commerce related breadth subjects, a few of my Biomed friends studied Principles of Finance last year (as well as myself) and we all really enjoyed it!  :D

Also intro micro or intro macro is a good shout if you're looking for a relatively chill but interesting subject.

Sorry, just another jaffy question  :P

So some of the level 3 breadths look really interesting! However, would the difficulty/workload be too much if they were taken in first year, particularly sem 1 (as opposed to a level 1)? If not, what is the main difference between the levels?

You can't do level 3 subjects in 1st year 1st sem, but yeah it'd typically be a bad idea regardless because there's a higher standard of work quality and being a first year wouldn't really grant you an exception. Doing a level 2 subject in second sem first year is possible and not farfetched, however.
