Dropping Maths

Hi Everyone
I'm currently in year 12 doing physics, pdhpe, advanced English, chemistry, biology and 2u math. I just got my mid-semester results back for math and failed by 4%. I was previously getting 50-80% in early year 11 however now find concepts much harder and I'm unable to match the equations/working out method with the question when I see it in an exam. I was wondering if it were to be beneficial if I dropped math altogether which would allow me to focus 7 more free hours on other subjects that I need to focus more attention on. However I would like to go to uni to do a science or medical degree and was wondering if I would be disadvantaging myself by dropping math. Early entry also requires 2u math at a lot of places. At the moment I'm in the position were I simply hate math and have no clue what to do.

It's a bit of a trade off for you here I think. Normally I'd say to anyone seriously hating on a subject that they should drop it - And certainly the extra hours of study are always nice! However, keeping 2U will make your life considerably easier in your first year of university, assuming you stick with a Science/Medical degree as you plan.

I think the key will be, have you hated Maths all along or have you only started hating it since your assessment result? If it is the latter, I think you just need to try and move forward, take steps to improve - I've no doubt that you can get yourself well above a pass mark in your next task if you are able to put the time in. It can be easy to let a less-than-ideal mark kill your confidence, instead try and use it as a motivator to improve and work as hard as you can!

If you've hated Maths all along though, maybe you should drop. Certainly it will ease your stress and let you focus your efforts elsewhere.

I don't think there's a right wrong. If you do drop you can always do a bridging course to catch up for uni, and if you keep I'm sure your marks will improve. Do what you think is right - And keep your chin up! :)

Thanks for the reply!! I think i have decided to drop math as i believe my time would be more valuable spent on subjects i truly enjoy and know i can perform better in. I will have a conversation with my careers advisor beforehand just to check out all my options and go from them

Happy you have made a decision! Make sure to ask your Careers Advisor about your eligibility for early entry/offers (as you probably already will) and also about bridging courses! Best of luck, I hope the change brings you less stress! :)

seems like the opposite situation to me... I did 3U in year 11 and I never passed a single 3U assessment in year 11 and I failed my 2U final assessment... but I took 4U because nobody is doing it.... I didn't do very well in my first 4U assessment but I actually did more than pass for the very first time for 3U after prelim and I aced the 2U paper.... again my advise is not the best as I do have a lot of gaps in mathematics here and there and I have been told multiple times by my tutor and other people I know (except for my ext 2 teacher) to drop ext 2 due to my weak foundations.... tbh I do not know why I got accepted to do the course because I know someone who get rejected from doing it but that is just my perspective..... I didn't do the course that I took merely for the ATAR, but I decided to enjoy my last year of school which is very very odd if you ask me
