What should i drop?

I'm currently in Year 12 rural student and doing 13 units. I would like to apologise in advance that what you will be reading will be complicated. :) I would like to drop a 2 unit or 1 unit subject to allow more study periods to focus on prerequisite subjects such as Chemistry (need to raise %). The courses that I'm interested are pre-med (Prerequisite: science) or Pharmacy (Prerequisite: maths, science) at University of wollongong and Monash or uow. I am applying for early entry for these courses later in the year, and a problem arises with pre-med I need 80% on 2 science subjects. The problem is chemistry, I would most preferably drop PDHPE however PDHPE counts as a science subject. Let me explain myself- i'm just worried if I dropped PDHPE and didn't achieve the marks in chemistry I wouldn't get a place in the admission.

The subjects that i am considering dropping are either PDHPE or Maths Ext. 1, however pharmacy has maths as a prerequisite (but i do maths adv) and i would like to keep both option open. I have too much extention subjects which is why a 2 unit subject drop is more preferable. What subject should i drop? opinions?

Subjects that I am currently doing: (which i think is too much)
English Adv.
English Ext. 1
English Ext. 2
Chemistry
Biology
PDHPE
Maths Adv.
Maths Ext. 1

Hi...
Welcome to ATAR Notes!!!!  ;D

I may be going out on a bit of a limb here, but have you considered dropping some of your extension English units? If you are really passionate about English, then it's an awesome idea to keep them. But looking at the uni courses you are interested in, I'm not sure how much of the extension English will be particularly needed/helpful in pre-med and pharmacy. So if they are getting to be a bit of a hassle, perhaps you could drop some/all of them...Just something to think about.

Also, in relation to PDHPE, if you are doing chem & bio, there's probably not much need to be doing PDHPE as well (as there is a fair bit of overlap in content).

I think it could be a good idea to keep maths extension 1, because as you said, it keeps your options open.

At the end of the day, think about which subject is the most stressful/hardest for you, and if it is not a prereq. in uni, then it is probably the subject to drop. Also remember, even if you don't do some of the subjects necessary for your course, there is always ways of working around it (e.g. bridging courses).  :D

Thankyou for your opinion! I'm very grateful (I've been stressing about this for quite a while) :)

I have considered dropping my English extentions, however i do enjoy the subjects and am doing quite well in both. I think you are right about dropping PDHPE. On top of that i just do not have the motivation to continue with PDHPE as it is a distance education subject with a lack of communication and is taking over the time on other subjects as there is a whole overload of work (a lot of context) to do alone without a face-to-face teacher.

Hey, MichLee!

First off, good luck with Year 12! I'm sure you'll smash it. :) By you just being here, you're demonstrating an approach of initiation, which is always a good mindset to have for Year 12.

Now onto the question. What you need to ask yourself is: is there a specific subject you don't really like? Don't worry about requiring prerequisite subjects (you can always do a bridging course before your course starts, so you won't be disadvantaged in any way), is PDHPE a subject you're not particularly enjoying? If so, that can be detrimental to your mentality when the real work kicks in. If you do like it, though, definitely consider keeping it!

The next question you will need to ask yourself is: is keeping the subject going to adversely affect your other subjects? Remember that your best 10 units will be counted towards your ATAR. If studying PDHPE (which is only 2 units) is going to start affecting the studies of your other subjects, you may be more inclined to drop it, and to sit the bridging course. You will want to perform to the best of your ability across the 10 units that you know will be counted, and if studying PDHPE hinders you maximising your marks, then you'd be better off dropping it.

Of course, these are just guides; only you can make the decisions based on how you feel about the different courses you're doing.
Good luck with it, and if you have any further questions, feel free to drop them below! :)
