Well everyone has their own opinions but personally I would rather have a monarchy and going by the countries that have one they seem better off than republics worldwide just my 2 cents

I also studied religion and a monarchy is mentioned in the bible as the preferred type of governance for the people so that also has an impact as I'm a Christian.

I have a respect for history too and traditions  and don't want to go around changing everything that's from the last for the sake of change.

I'm very happy with a monarchy and I don't want change.
I respect that you’re a Christian and all, but I think that the bible has no weight in such a debate ^^

The bible is just a religious text :)

Even if people are religious , most people wouldn’t use a religious argument .

(I mean no disrespect :,))

Because I would have to disagree if that's the case a system of  government  makes a big difference. Look st the divide in America for starters.

I believe America's issues go far, far beyond their system of governance. And the division you speak of isn't exclusive to the USA. Even in Australia, there is a substantial right-wing vs left-wing division; and yet we're a constitutional monarchy?

Further, it's important to remember that there are a number of different types of republics Australia could become. Obviously the USA system involves a directly-elected president, however Australia does not have to follow suit. Personally, I believe the model recently proposed by Jones and Pickering (https://theconversation.com/a-model-for-an-australian-republic-that-can-unite-republicans-and-win-a-referendum-89919) would be very effective in Australia; as it would retain the role of the Executive as being generally ceremonial (thus maintaining stability), whilst also ensuring that this person is:
1) an Australian,
2) someone who has outstandingly served Australia in some way (like an Australian of the Year), and
3) chosen by the people through a non-binding vote.

I support being a republic as most people have noted my reasons already. Seems far more equitable.

I'm down for the return of the British Empire with brexit looming and China playing hardball.

Could use a trading partner like the UK.

I would love to retain a consititutional monarchy I personally hate republics.
Don’t mean to take this off-topic, but can you explain what you mean with the “China playing hardball”? Will revoke downvote when you do so, as it stands, it sounds like an attack towards China.

Yes, I too would enjoy if Australia directed their trade towards the UK more so than China. Especially given that the UK is preparing to trade with China a lot more once they leave the EU, not Australia. I’m sure the Australian economy will hold up just fine..

I'll live with the downvote lol If you disagree you disagree. No problem at all.

At the risk of going off topic I'll bite

Economic trade is my speciality and it's true the worlds economies are interdependent but it's also true that China needs our exports, moreover a China- US trade war is possible the way things are going.

While we need China and China needs Australia they have been playing hardball recently with both the US and Australia so I would like Australia to show a bit off backbone and flex its muscles a bit to show that we're not afraid to do the same and opening up trade with the UK and the US a bit more can have that desired impact.

If you haven't been keeping up with the maybe you wouldn't know the recycling situation  with China right now but they've left us in a pickle I'll link a few articles that show what I mean.

I see, however I’d disagree with the point where you say Australia isn’t flexing its muscles. Australia was in a position where they could benefit quite heavily with a healthy relationship with both the US and China, but it’s been quite evident lately that the Australian government has chosen to be on friendlier terms with US. Namely through the blatant sinophobia during November and December 2017, Australia's condemnation of China's assistance to the pacific islands and now Australia and Japan's joint defence force deal.

Edit: oops, seems to be off topic. To relate this back to the thread, I still believe Australia should be a republic.

I regret starting this post.
Why? I think that this is great, without having to argue something, your opinions will never be set, and therefore learning how to debate something is a very good learning curve, even if the subject isn't a life or death issue.
