(1/1)

dcesaona:
I am finalising my ancient history notes and need some clarity on these quick questions! If anyone knows the answer to any of them please let me know  :)

1) Do we get asked about the dot point 'nature of sources and evidence'?
2) When describing the geographical context of Pompeii do we have to mention what it looked like during/after the eruption?
3) Do we need to know all of the 8 gates in detail?
4) Do we need to know about the currency used in Pompeii and Herculaneum?
5) Do we need to know what the stratigraphy levels from the eruption look like?
6) Do we need to know every stage of the pyroclastic surges in detail?
7) When you’re talking about the different industries in P&H you’re answering trade/occupations/commerce at the same time right?
8. How many industries should we know? What if one of the sources in the question is an industry we don’t know in detail?
9) What is the Guild of the Fullers?
10) What if you have no evidence for Herculaneum? For instance, for the political life in Herculaneum I can't find any sources
11) For an outline the social structure question would you include women as well?
12) We don't need to know the specific layouts of the baths in Pompeii and Herculaneum right?
13) How many baths should we know in extensive detail? Three from each city or more?
14) Is it compulsory to know about palaestra - in regards to Leisure Activities?
15) Do we need to know about the gladiator barracks?
16) Is health the same as sanitation?

Thank you soo much!

1) Do we get asked about the dot point 'nature of sources and evidence'?

--- End quote ---
If its on the syllabus, they can ask it! So be prepared for anything, but more often than not that is more so information to include throughout your response, rather than the focus of the question. For example if you got a question on evidence for the eruption, then you might want to discuss the nature of evidence in relation to Pliny the Younger's account.

--- End quote ---
You describe what it was like when the civilisation was still active (though the geography wouldn't have changed that much after the eruption on a physical aesthetic level)

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---3) Do we need to know all of the 8 gates in detail?

--- End quote ---
Not in detail, no. However its always good to have that detail to incorporate in your responses!

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---4) Do we need to know about the currency used in Pompeii and Herculaneum?

--- End quote ---
It's good to know, but very unlikely they will ask a question specifically on that. Its more so good detail to include in responses on the wide topic of the economic/commercial activities.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---5) Do we need to know what the stratigraphy levels from the eruption look like?

--- End quote ---
I don't think so, but again good to know! Great detail to include when talking about Fiorelli's plaster casts.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---6) Do we need to know every stage of the pyroclastic surges in detail?

--- End quote ---
In detail, no. But if you do have that knowledge it will enhance the response.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---7) When you’re talking about the different industries in P&H you’re answering trade/occupations/commerce at the same time right?

--- End quote ---
Pretty much yeah. They go hand in hand imo.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---8) How many industries should we know? What if one of the sources in the question is an industry we don’t know in detail?

--- End quote ---
You should know AT LEAST two (preferably more), with evidence for both Pompeii and Herculaneum for both. If you don't know much about the industry in the source, you're in a pickle, but it happens to the best of us! Just do the best you can, and see if you can gear the discussion to other industries (that still relate to the source).

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---9) What is the Guild of the Fullers?

--- End quote ---
An association of fullers (laudromat workers) who work in the pursuit of a common goal - similar to a union.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---10) What if you have no evidence for Herculaneum? For instance, for the political life in Herculaneum I can't find any sources

--- End quote ---
You really need to make sure that you have sources for both Pompeii and Herculaneum. You will lose marks if you only talk about Pompeii. For Herculanean political life you can talk about the statues of Marcus Nonius Balbus (or anything related to him really!)

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---11) For an outline the social structure question would you include women as well?

--- End quote ---
Yes, you should definitely be including women.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---12) We don't need to know the specific layouts of the baths in Pompeii and Herculaneum right?

--- End quote ---
No but its good detail if you can. Nice to know the different functions of some of the rooms as well.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---13) How many baths should we know in extensive detail? Three from each city or more?

--- End quote ---
I'd say 1-2 from each city would be fine, though of course more is always a bonus!

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---14) Is it compulsory to know about palaestra - in regards to Leisure Activities?

--- End quote ---
Yes. It's very important for sporting and athletic activities.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---15) Do we need to know about the gladiator barracks?

--- End quote ---
A good thing to know, though I highly doubt you will get a question simply on gladiator barracks.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---16) Is health the same as sanitation?

--- End quote ---
No, though they work hand in hand much of the time. Health includes such things as diet, medicines, surgery and common diseases. Sanitation includes water supply (and water borne diseases), and sewerage mainly.

--- Quote from: celinedeus on April 04, 2018, 12:01:01 pm ---Thank you soo much!

--- End quote ---
No worries! I hope this was helpful :)
