I'm pretty sure that an alkyl alkanoate is just a type of ester, so you're correct to assume they mean the same thing ^_^

Yup! Remember that:
alkyl = general prefix given to any alkanol in an ester (e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, ...) and
alkanoate = general suffix given to any alkanoic acid in an ester (e.g. methanoate, ethanoate, propanoate, ...)
