Help with utilizing/remembering Historiography, historians/quotes in exams
(1/1)
Mada438:
Okay so today i got my half yearly mark back for modern and in the section with my Germany essay, i got 20/25. Now while this is a solid mark, the piece of feedback i got given was that it lacked Historiography, historians/quotes to push it up a few marks.
When i got my take-home essay on Germany, i absolutely nailed the historiography and quotes, get 25/25
But when it comes to writing an essay under timed conditions, i don't know how to remember/utilize it; and with my personality study on Speer properly underway, I'm gonna need Historiography, historians/quotes even more.
So my question is pretty much does anyone have any advice regarding studying Historiography, historians/quotes and then remembering and utilising it within an exam situation under timed conditions??
Thanks in advance!

Hey there,
I've heard that you can paraphrase the historian but I generally memorise quotes manually- writing it out a few times, reciting it (especially in the bathroom lol). My Modern exam was a sighted question but for unsighted questions, I would have at least one quote supporting a different point. For example, my Year 11 yearly exam, we kinda knew it was gonna be on the causes of WW1 so I had a list of quotes, at least 2 or 3 to argue why, say, Germany could be blamed for WW1 and I did this with Britain, France, Russia etc (of course, there was a lot of evidence and quotes for Germany).
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to memorise quotes so reciting and rewriting is the way to go (unless someone else has some suggestions).
Hope this helps!

Just adding on to what owidjaja said:
- Yep, you can paraphrase historians. I don't know about other teachers, but mine let us paraphrase, as long as we said something like "(Historian) argues _______" or something like that. This might help if you can't memorise quotes!
- In saying that, you don't need quotes to do well! As long as you've included lots of other details, you'll be good.
- As for actually memorising quotes, accents are super useful! I don't know but there's just something about reciting quotes in an accent that makes it easier to remember. It makes it a little bit more fun when studying as well hahaha.
Hope this helps!

Love love love this idea! Partly because I'm now just imagining you in a dark room, desperately reciting, as accurately as you can;
ich bin ein berliner also works ;)
