Operant conditioning timing of consequence

Does the consequence for a behaviour have to occur immediately after the behaviour for the association between the consequence and behaviour to be formed? Or can an association still be formed if the consequence occurs after a period of time?

I did psych last year, so my knowledge is a bit fuzzy but I think that the association should happen within a short time frame if not almost immediately, otherwise the subject won't be able to make the connection between the behaviour and the consequence.

The association is strongest when the consequence is presented immediately after and decreases in strength the longer the delay.
