Sketching trig graphs

i find it relatively easy when dealing with dilations and vertical translations, but I am really struggling to sketch trig graphs with horizontal translations; my thought process goes to mush :(.  How important is it to be able to sketch trig graphs with phase shifts by hand, and did you have any tips/guides to do so?
