Hi everyone,

I'm working on my speech and I need a synonym with a negative connotation to make it sound more critical for the word purchases. More insight: my speech is about designer babies and I contend that it should not be used. My original line is:
...those unable to afford such purchases may opt to use the dark web ...

Thanks.

Edit: a friend proposed the word extremities, maybe a word similar to that may be better

Not sure of any really.
Maybe acquisitions? Still kinda neutral...
But you could use an appropriate adverb before it though, to get the desired affect...

Acquisitions sounds very unemotional so I think it would be good, otherwise you could try something like

‘Those who can’t afford to acquire these entities ...’ as that would open up more options (acquires and entities could both be switched out if you find more menacing synonyms)

Yes, acquisition is a good word, as it sounds dehumanising. Other words that could be used are "possessions", "procure", "attain", "amass", "collect". Really anything that would emphasise your perspective on the lack of humanity you could see in designer babies, or the people interested in the investment of the idea.
