First Year Sem 1 Result Query

First Year commerce student -
Initially I was planning on majoring in accounting and finance. However, my result for accounting this semester is pretty low (lowest out of all my subjects). Luckily I managed to score quite high in my other subjects and my WAM is still in the H1 region. However, I'm not sure if this will still be the case if I continue accounting next semester. Should I take the semester 2 accounting subject and pursue majoring in accounting (risking a fail/decreasing WAM) in the hopes that I will improve or is this a sign that I should reconsider my major? This semester was my first time taking an accounting subject (I had no prior knowledge) so do I just need more time to adjust? Were your semester one results similar to results for later semesters or is it possible to improve significantly?

Sorry this was such a long post and filled with so many questions. Thank you for taking the time to read all of it and I would really appreciate any advice! Thank you so much!

Depends. Do you like Accounting? Are you willing to work harder to understand the fundamentals of Accounting in semester two? If not, don't do it.

What do you want to do after uni?

If not accounting-related then just drop it.

Thank you for your input!
I do have an interest in accounting and I really want to work harder, it's just perhaps these marks are an indication that accounting's just not for me. But seeing as I did enjoy going to the tutes and lectures, I'm going to try accounting in sem 2 and then see how I go. If I don't do too well again, I'll just drop it.

Thank you so much for your quick responses, I really appreciate them!

I did a Bachelor of Accounting, trust me mate, it really isn't too difficult. The hardest part is classification, so if you are given an account e.g. Bank Overdraft, you need to know which financial statement it goes in, what it is classified as and whether an increase in the account is on the debit side or the credit side. Once you understand this for every account, it's really really easy and this knowledge alone will get you to 3rd year accounting subjects. (I did accounting in VCE and my year 11 and 12 knowledge got me to 3rd year university, I just tweaked it here and there).

If you're really struggling, get a VCE Accounting text book or a tutor, there are heaps of student tutors who are willing to help tutor the 1st year units.

Idk, my friend averaged like 70 for his accounting subjects but has a WAM of ~87.... i think it's really finding what works with you best

I wouldn't worry too much if I were in your shoes. First year is really hard and your WAM is probably not a particularly good reflection of your ability, hence the reason it's a "weighted" mean and not unweighted. I got a 65 in Chem in my first semester but graduated biochem with an average of 87, so in truth it really does mean very little.
