I found the jump from year 10 maths into Methods 1/2 super difficult and I'm wondering whether anyone found it worse from 1/2 to 3/4? There were so many things introduced in 1/2 that weren't mentioned in year 10.

I have the option of finishing 3/4 next year or waiting until year 12. I think completing methods next year is better but I'm relying on the hope that 3/4 is basically the same as 1/2 with barely any extra topics.

thanks   :D

This can vary a lot between schools, depending on how the Year 10 Maths curriculum is structured (ie. are students streamed into Methods / General prerequisites?), how difficult the assessment tasks are, what content is taught, etc. It also depends on how the Year 11 curriculum is structured (ie. course timeline, difficulty of assessment tasks, etc.) Seek advice from teachers / other students at your school.

As far as differences in content between 3/4 and 1/2 go, the main new topics are:

  • Composite functions
  • Techniques for differentiating a wider variety of functions than just polynomials / power functions
  • Integration and area under a graph
  • Random variables and inferential statistics

Look at the study design to see what is in the course.

I didn't do year 10 maths and jumped straight into methods 1/2 from year 9 maths. It was difficult but with the right study and approach, you will be fine. A lot of 3/4 concepts are just from 1/2 but in more detail.

I think doing Methods 3/4 next year is the better option unless you have another better 3/4 to do instead. What other subjects are you doing? :)

Most of the topics in 3/4 were just an extension of 1/2 for me. So I recon that it's easier... :D

Year 10 to 1/2 was an absolute prick for me - despite attempting to learn unit circle in year ten, most of it was extremely high paced, and high content. I feel that I didn't have a strong enough base in a lot of topics for the 1/2, but 3/4 is condensing them and building on them, so that is pretty good... :D

Ok thanks! My cohort is super competitive and the work is pretty difficult. I'll ask a few people at my school about what they think.
Also thanks for the list!

I'm planning to do biology next year and I'm a little worried that doing methods with bio will be too much content (but then I don't want to postpone methods to do with chem in year 12 which I'm super unconfident in).

My school also looks at my grades later in the year so I may not even have the option of doing 2 3/4s  :(

I'm actually feeling that exact way right now- and I'm doing circular functions currently and my mind is fried..

If you can, I'd say go for it! Bio can be done without the 1/2, and seriously even if you get >40 in it, getting a 3/4 over with in Yr 11 gives you a big confidence boost going into Yr 12... Plus, you get to do the GAT twice, so you are a lot more confident in the Yr 12 Gat... :D

thanks for your insight!

Anytime... glad to help if I can :D
What's that hardest thing you find with Circulars?

p.s. Try not to double post. You can reply to more than 1 person at once... :)
