Oral presentation???
« on: September 10, 2018, 08:43:54 pm »

Hi,

I have my oral presentation end of this week.
I am struggling to greet my audience (teachers and students). Except from "Good morning everyone" I don't really know what to say. I'd like to use a more sophisticated way (hope this makes sense). I want to greet the teachers first and then the students.

If someone has any idea... Any help is appreciated!

Thank you very much

If you are using an interesting "hook" at the start, you could just bust into that without any pre-amble.
Or if you feel confident enough, give them a cheery "Hey there all!"

Thanks for the reply S200, I appreciate it. However, I am looking in a more "serious" way to greet them.

Thanks again

I didn't do VCE english but I have done a lot of public speaking, and it's generally best to start with a hook to engage the audience.

What are your first few lines?

Based on this, I'm assuming that your topic is serious, and that your speech will be quite formal? Some useful devices are: hypothetical scenarios/imagery ("imagine..."), shocking statistics, heart-wrenching/enlightening anecdotes, or a barrage of emotive words.

Experiment!

If you can't think of the perfect start yet, just write the rest of your speech first and then come back to it (I used to do this, too). Often when you write the bulk of your speech - the actual meat of your speech - you will have an even more complete understanding of what it is you want your audience to take away from your presentation. That can then guide you in deciding how to launch off your whole speech.

Yes, my topic is quite serious and I am planning on doing a formal speech. I have already written the speech but I am struggling with the greeting. Also, I planned on starting with a hook, however my teacher really insist by starting to greet the audience. Why? I have no idea... but she is the one who will mark my speech therefore I don't have any other choice.

Hey Perla,

You can start with a formal greeting and still have a hook. Go with a brief greeting (as otherwise it'll detract from the punchiness of your hook) then immediately jump straight into your hook. As an example, Stan Grant does it pretty well here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA3UsF8yyho

Thank you sdfg, I will still use a hook after the greeting. Do you have any sentence that I can use to greet the teachers first then the student?
