Good ranks, bad HSC

Hey guys,
My internal marks/ranks are quite good but then I think I'm going to do quite poorly in the external HSC. Does this mean my ATAR is dragged down substantially? My estimate Atar based on my raw weighted averages was 90.4 but now I think I'm going to drop to below 80. Is this possible? Thanks

Welcome to the forums George! ;D

Essentially, strong internal marks (well, ranks) are a security blanket for the HSC. Ranks give you a bit of breathing room because it means moderation will be kind to you. Give this a read if you want the specifics! :)

However, a strong performance in the exam itself is still important. Aim to maximise them as much as possible!

(If your marks right now suggest you will get an ATAR in the 90's, I highly doubt you'd drop to below 80 from HSC results. Why do you think you are going to go poorly in the HSC?)

Ah ok I see, so because of scaling and cohort weighting etc, it should pull me up a bit. Thanks very much for answering my question. I reckon I'll go poorly because the sheer amount of work in each exam is really overwhelming and I struggle remembering everything in one go

Don't put yourself down so much - Positivity is a performance enhancer. Try to focus on positives and really aim to smash it, because you can if you work hard! :)
