What’s the difference between decimal place and significant figures? Thanks!
E.g the number is 23.38320
decimal places is the number of positions AFTER the decimal point so if you are asked to 2 decimal places then it will be 23.38
'3' and '8' being the two positions after the point.
significant figures relates to the numbers itself whether before or after the decimal place, so if asked to 2 significant figures it would 23 as those are the first two numbers. Three significant figures? 23.4 (4 because its rounded up due to the 8 being present afterwards)
Im pretty sure there a websites online that you can literally do for 10 minutes that can help you figure out the difference. This is particularly crucial to learn if you are doing any maths or science based subjects, examiners actually penalise you if you do not convert to appropriate figures, despite the correct answer.
