Section A prompts

Occasionally, we get prompts like this in the exam (VCAA 2015 Exam):
“... her mother’s intentions were far more violent than her blows."
Isobel’s life is shaped by her mother’s treatment of her.’
Discuss.
This prompt seems very specific and limiting, so I find it very difficult to think about the implications. How would you approach a topic like this? Even if you're not familiar with the text, I would appreciate the input.
