Should I do VCE Literature?

(1/1)

I'm an EAL student, but I've been told that my level of English is that of a mainstream English year 10 student. I absolutely adore reading, but I know that those who choose English Literature tend to be the same, and they typically prepare themselves years beforehand.I feel as if I'd have a huge disadvantage, if I were to chose it because I just don't have the same level of dexterity when it comes to writing essays.
Has anyone been in my shoes, or has anyone jumped from mainstream English to English Literature who can share their opinion?
Thank you so much.

Hello,

Firstly, I'd like to dispel the idea that Literature students typically spend 'years' preparing. While it is common for students to read/watch their texts prior to the school year beginning, this is probably as advanced as it gets. Literature is a subject that thrives on the exchange and healthy debate of ideas. Therefore, there is no real benefit that a student will gain from preparing substantially early. This is particularly true for writing practice. You'll find that class discussions, coupled with the feedback of your teacher, is where you will see the most improvement in your analytical skills. Of course every student will come into Literature with different writing abilities, but even if you do feel a little behind, this will correct itself with consistent effort and recognition of your teacher's advice.

All the best :)
