how do you tell backward flow?

I know that if the flow is going towards the source, it is a backward flow. In a minimum cut/maximum flow, my teacher also said that if a flow begins on the sink side of the diagram and ends on the source side, it is a backward flow. However, on the 2006 exam 1, question 6 (module 5) says that b is not a backward flow. Can anyone please clarify?

the node where "b" originates starts on the orange hence is forward, whereas something like "d" would be a backwards.
