Science at Melbourne uni or Monash?

Hi guys. I just completed yr12 in 2018 and I'm still struggling to decide whether to do science at melbourne uni or monash :( I'm looking to major in neuroscience hopefully! Which uni is better for me to choose and why? (I live closer to the monash campus but location isn't really a bother to me). Please help!

Hey Fluffball,

Welcome to ATAR Notes. :)

You should note that Monash does not have a neuroscience major in their course but Melbourne does (edit: look at what VanillaRice said below).
At Monash you have to take at least one math/stats unit, and one scientific communication unit which can be detailed here. As for Melbourne, sample course maps for each science major can be found here.

Good luck with your decision!

To add on to this, you can still complete a neuroscience-related major at Monash through a Physiology major (which is a broader topic area which neuroscience falls under).

I'm at Melbourne and I've taken a few subjects from the human sciences area (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology) and I have been extremely pleased with how they are run (and friends who have completed neuroscience subjects have found them to be very good). Something that Melbourne does that Monash doesn't is the body donor program. If you are interested in taking subjects in the anatomy/human structure and function (which you may if you are considering neuroscience), you will get to look at real human specimens and at a third year level, actively participate in dissections of cadavers.

I would suggest thinking about a few majors that you are interested in and compare and contrast between the universities. Many people go to university with an entire plan only to realise that they want to go down a completely different path (for instance, I wanted to medicine when I first went to uni and after first year I realised that I really enjoy chemistry and am now majoring in it)

I'd recommend reading through these threads

They are subject reviews, written by fellow ATARNotes users and I've always found them to be very good at encapsulating the subjects. Read through them to give you an idea of both universities and compare similar subjects between the two.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you so much 😊 really appreciate you adding those two attachments (especially that melb sample course map!)
To add on to this, you can still complete a neuroscience-related major at Monash through a Physiology major (which is a broader topic area which neuroscience falls under).

Would it just be better then to choose melb uni over monash because melb uni offers neuroscience as a major by itself unlike monash? Or does it really not matter at all?
(Also, thanks for replying!!)

Hey thanks so much for replying 😁😁  (out of curiosity since you are a melbourne student, how do you find the use of those breadth subjects?)

Also, thanks so much for linking those two threads. Had no idea atarnotes had this!

My (unexperienced) opinion is that it probably wouldn't matter - neuroscience is a field within physiology, and if say, you were applying for a job, you would likely supply your academic transcript anyway, which would list your neuroscience units (regardless of the university or major you completed them through). I think that factors like location, scholarships, course opportunities (e.g. work placements), your plan after university are probably more important in your choice :)
