Can I get a 99+ ATAR

I've got a friend who didn't do the classical "high-achieving" subjects - Methods, Chem, Spesh, etc. (as they didn't interest him) and still got a score above 97. Scaling is all well and good but doing subjects that make learning enjoyable is much more important :)

Yeah! Literally only one of my subjects scaled up (EngLang - not by heaps), and I did fine. I would have done way worse had I tried to do those subjects that traditionally scale up a lot.

I am currently in Year 10 and I plan to get into Arts/Law which requires a 99+ ATAR?
Unlike my other peers, I have not received good grades from a young age.
I plan to do subjects along the lines of: Latin, French, Legal Studies, History, English and Literature.
I currently get A’s in these subjects.
If I started working incredibly hard from now on, would it be possible to get a 99+ ATAR?
Or is it too late to beat my peers who are already ahead of me?
Also how can I start studying for these subjects now

There’s no need to stress at all. Your grades in the early years of high school have very little bearing on what you can get in VCE. If you are already getting As in all your subjects, it sounds like you are doing well and are in a good position to start working hard in year 11 to push for a 99+ ATAR. I remember in year 10, I was a pretty mediocre Latin student and got a C+ at the end of the year, but I worked incredibly hard at it in year 12 and managed to get a study score of 38, which scaled up to 51. It’s never too late to start working hard.

I also did Latin, French and Literature! :)
You're obviously going to have to work hard but it's definitely achievable if you're already getting As. I picked up Latin in year 10 via distance ed and was still struggling with it at the start of year 12 but ended up with 3 As and a study score of 35 (scaled 49.63). You might be able to do even better!
With Lit, my main advice would be to read a lot of literary criticism about your texts but you don't necessarily need to do that on year 10.
It might be worth getting tutoring for your subjects in year 12 but for now you should be fine as long as you keep consolidating what you're learning. Good luck!
