Are Uni Grades Important?

Hey there, so I've been lurking around and have found quite a few posts regarding grades and how to maintain HDs/H1 grades at uni. Just based on my readings of the posts here, it seems like uni grades are regarded quite highly, perhaps even more so than ATARs. So I'm just wondering, other than having a good WAM for getting into internships and exchange opportunities, impressing asian parents etc. are there other reasons as to why people work hard for their HDs?

I think the perceived importance of uni grades over ATARs is that it is the more recent academic record (and focused on a certain discipline) so that is what potential employers will likely focus on. For the most part your ATAR is only relevant until you get your uni offers. As for the reasons of wanting high scores would differ between different people. In addition to the reasons you have suggested I would think some other reasons would be personal satisfaction, competitiveness, a by-product of being interested in the content and genuinely wanting to learn it properly.

Well, once the ATAR has gotten you into a course it has kinda done its job so it's not hard to be more important than the ATAR. I've found that in uni there is less of a focus on grades and more of an emphasis on learning, getting work experience etc compared to VCE. A lot of people who share their grades on atarnotes are more academic than the average student so keep that in mind too.

As Sine explained, the reasons for keeping high grades can vary between people. Additionally, sometimes have to maintain a minimum wam to stay in your course or be competitive for a postgraduate opportunity you're interested in.

Thanks guys :D

What would be the main purpose of going to uni for you? IMO this changes what the response to your questions would be. :)
