Oral SAC Topic Ideas - 2019

Sooooo, for English we need to write and present a persuasive speech for a contentious issue that has been recently debated about in the media - no earlier than September 2018. For our school, this will be done later in the year but the teachers are wanting us to send them our chosen issue ASAP.... and I did not anticipate it to be this early on in the year. I'm just wondering if anyone has some ideas that they would like to share to point me in the right direction and/or any advice for selecting a topic, maybe even some examples...

In my experience, I found that keeping up to date with the news was the best way to select a topic for the oral presentation. You can always try picking up a past newspaper (dated after September 2018) and see what particular topics interests you, and form a contention for your speech. My list is by no means an exhaustive list but hopefully it gives you an idea of what topics are available:

- Changing Australia Day
- Paramedic assaults in Victoria
- Raising the ATAR for undergraduate teaching courses
- Christmas Island detention facility
- Alternative medicines and therapies
- Sugar tax
- Suppression orders
- Changing Australia's education system
- Legal aid funding

I agree, it will be worth it to check news sites for follow up articles about the issue you choose.  In this way you'll be able to get a good understanding of the range of concerns and stakeholders involved in your chosen topic.  Some other topics you might want to consider are:
- disability discrimination
- women in politics
- funding for/policy on victims of domestic violence
- sporting figures as role models.

I would suggest you go to your school librarian! You are required to write a speech about an issue that has been in the Australian media over the past 9 months - your school's librarian should have kept very handy files (physical or digital) on all the issues that have come up over the past few months that have proven popular with writers.
