All relationships in The Great Gatsby are based on control. Do you agree?

My teacher wants it to be based more on "ideas" rather than couples. I just need a few pointers to start off with.

For a start, make sure you understand the key terms ("relationships" and "control").  Find synonyms for these terms so you can avoid repetition in your essay.  In your planning, think about the range of relationships in the novel - family relationships (Nick and Daisy are cousins, Daisy and Tom are married, Myrtle and George Wilson are also married, Gatsby and his father Henry), "family-like" relationships (Gatsby and Dan Cody, Gatsby and Wolfshiem), social relationships (Nick and Jordan Baker, Gatsby's party guests, Gatsby's servants).  Exploring these different types of relationships could be used for your discussion in the body paragraphs of your essay.  This would put the attention on the idea of "relationships" not "couples." How are these relationships developed through the novel and what types or levels of control maintain and/or enforce them?  Are these relationships eroded or changed by the end of the novel? What does "control" refer to (control of what or whom)?
