isnt a study score of 40 in the top 20% for the subject? so there'd be 20% of ppl doing Further that get 40+

No top 8%.  Getting on or above 45 is top 2%.

You can also find a good approximation of it (approximation by using round figures). By using a normal graph with a mean of 30 and a standard deviation of 7, you will see that a 40 requires you to be in approximately the top 8% of the state, 45 requires you to be in the top 2% of the state and a 50 is the top 0.2% of the state.

That is kind of why only a few people get above 45

Easy questions and ceoncepts, yes.  Hard to score high marks, yes.  Pretty much need to score close to perfect marks if you're looking for a 45+.

It varies from year to year but apparantly, if you lose 2 marks overall in both exams then you've still got a chance for a 50 and any mark lost after that equals a study score gone. eg. 2 marks lost =50, 3 marks lost= 49, 4 marks lost= 48 etc.
