My teacher says I can't do english 3/4 in year 11?

Hi this is my first post I hope i'm doing it right!

I want to do English 3/4 next year in year 11. My teacher said no it's not allowed but I can’t find anything on the vcaa website that says it’s not allowed. I want to do english early as it has to be in your top 4 and it’ll be hard to get a good score in year 12 when I’ve also got other 3/4s. So is it allowed or not??

thanks in advance!!

Aaron:
It's not if your school doesn't allow you to. I would be speaking to somebody with authority to make decisions relating to enrolment e.g. a coordinator to discuss this as it differs from school to school. One school may allow you to do it as they have the capacity and flexibility to do so, while others might not.

A school can say no on curriculum/timetabling grounds - that's when you'd then explore other options and possibilities e.g. Distance, but I don't think you'd want to do that for a critical subject such as English.

Timetabling works in blocks - so if the subject you want to do doesn't go well with your other options, then it is definitely not possible. The timetable unfortunately takes priority over personal requests. There are so many factors at play when a decision is made like this, such as class numbers, availability of teachers, the works.... so if they say you can't do it, rest assured there's probably a really good reason why.

Perhaps you could explore doing  3/4 in another subject during Year 11, one which the school allows?

Hey there!

Just to add to Aaron's already comprehensive response above -- I did literature 3/4 in year 11, and yes it is definitely allowed! However, different schools have different polices, and yours might be particularly strict on what subjects you can and cannot do early. In my case, the school initially said no, and I had to write a special application and talk to my year 10 English teacher, Head of VCE English, and the main VCE Coordinator, before the school allowed me into 3/4. I’d recommend you to go speak to your current English teacher as well as your school's head of VCE about it and see what they have to say.

Also, doing English 3/4 in year 11 is definitely not recommended by most schools. The advantage of doing it in year 12 is that chances are you'll have the experience from whatever 3/4 you previously did in year 11 to know what you should and should not do in year 12. This might not be as much of a problem if you've already done / are currently doing a 3/4 though.

Hope it works out with your school! Good luck :)))

Thanks Aaron, thing is, surely the school hasn't made the timetable for 2020 already? I get that it won't work if there's really a clash, but we haven't done (official) our subject selections yet.

I've thought of doing another subject early but since english is the most important subject I want to do it in year 11 when it's my only 3/4, as opposed to year 12 when there are a bunch of other subjects which I must also pay attention to.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Collins thanks for your response.

I'm doing psych 3/4 this year so if I do english early it won't be my first 3/4 subject.

Congrats on your 50 in lit btw. do you think it helped doing it in year 11 when you didn't have four other 3/4s to pay attention to?

thanks!
