I have studied these two texts for comparative, for EAL. The themes would involve forgiveness, fear, courage, overcome challenges, cohesion, revenge, unifying, determination, inspiration, sacrifices, etc. I have already forgotten a lot but if you have questions about a particular theme, I should be able to help out as well. I am not sure which stage you are at for these texts, have you finished reading and done some analysis? Which text do you like the best?

I am new here, so I have no idea how to reply to someone lol, I hope this is how. I have read and watched both, I prefer ransom because I think Malouf's writing style is so captivating. It is more invictus I need help in. The teacher said I need to develop more "nuanced ideas" for invictus.

Which one did you prefer?

(:

Hey, I would suggest writing practice essays for your teacher to mark, even just introductions, ask for topics or even combine themes to make your own. The body paragraphs are important as well but that is to show how well you have expanded from the introduction.

If you are still at the preparation stage for comparison writing, it's a bit hard to pinpoint exactly the weaknesses in your writing. However, the 'nuanced ideas' that your teacher wants to see mght include something more than just connections between characters or bits of the plot. You could consider things like the mood of certain scenes (eg the sound and smell of the sea in "Ransom" and the use of traditional African music in "Invictus" - I'm thinking of the music in the scene of the rugby clinic and the use of the national anthem and world cup song.) There's also dress and costume to consider (Achilles' armour, Priam's plain white robe, Mandela's shirt with tribal design and his wearing of the Springbok track suit). Your comparison writing might include discussion of the ideas these things suggest/convey.
