Solubility rules

(1/1)

elizabethbeth:
Using NAGSAG rules for solubility with PMS and Castrobar exceptions, how can you work out if for example whether each of those below are soluble as they aren’t part of the NAGSAG list?

Barium phosphate
Magnesium hydroxide

Thanks for any help

fun_jirachi:
Welcome to the forums!

Both of those I think are insoluble. I think that unfortunately you actually have to remember exceptions; precipitation tests for ions often help because common precipitates are used for these tests and overlap with common ones mentioned elsewhere. Outside of this, there are other ways to commit the rest of them to memory (ie. more acronyms! or something or other), but unfortunately, I don't have a better method :(

Hope this helps anyway! :)
