I don't understand why I do better in Literature 1+2 than I do in mainstream

I wanted to do literature units 1 and 2 in year 11 but was practically forced to do mainstream as well to fill in a spot for a subject. Despite lit being the harder subject of all the Englishes I don't seem to know why I do way better in it than with English which people say is much easier. Any suggestions or similar cases?

This quote is subjective - perhaps you are more inclined/interested in Literature as opposed to what mainstream English offers?
