Oral Health V Dentistry

I just got accepted into Oral Health, but I'm still unsure of what career opportunities I have.

Is Oral Health the same as dentistry, where I can work as a dentist to clean patient's teeth, do scaling, etc? Or is it working as a dental assistant?

Could someone please clarify the differences between Bach of Oral Health and Dentistry please! Thanks!

Firstly, congratulations on getting accepted  :)

If you do a Bachelor of Oral Health, you can become a dental hygienist or an oral health/dental therapist. So, you will be heavily involved in the dental care and the oral health of individuals.

Oral Health is not the same thing as dentistry, however, you will have the opportunity to work closely with dentists and that could be as an assistant like you have stated.

I was beaten by Sine, but I just wanted to add:

To become a dental assistant, you will need to complete either a Certificate III in Dental Assisting HLT35015 or Certificate IV in Dental Assisting HLT45015 at an accredited TAFE institution.
Being a dental assistant is different to being a dental hygienist or an oral health/dental therapist.

Thank you for the replies, do you guys know what's the main difference between oral health and dentistry? I assumed that they can both do the cleaning/check up most people goto yearly right?

Also, do you know if there's credit available when transferring from Biomed Monash?

Hey mervyn10!

This link from the Dental Board of Australia might help you out with the difference between oral health and dentistry.

It is unlikely that you will be able to get credit from biomed at Monash as the units for Oral Health seem specific to the course (found under the 'What will I study?' section in the link Sine gave). Having a look at the UniMelb credit transfer (link here), it doesn't look like Monash biomed units can count for the Oral Health degree.
