Heyyyy,
I was in the same boat as you last year, but everyone is in the same boat as you. Therefore, everyone is willing to make friends, you'll be fine talking to people in lectures (and O-WEEK) you'll easily make friends. Just go up to someone and say HEY (yes, very scary but no one will ignore you everyone is wanting to make friends- so don't stress if you're lucky maybe so extroverts will come to you, otherwise just saying hey can go a long way.
Also, making friends in tutes and labs are easy since you are stuck with the people around for the rest of the term :)
Feel free to pm me as a fellow UoM student we can all support each other ;D

omg I have been so worried about the possibility of people not wanting to talk people in lectures. It really doesn't help that the year I start uni, Monash is delaying O week...
Sine:
Lectures are probably the hardest place to make friends imo. That is because if you turn up a few minutes early you can maybe sit next to someone and start a conversation, however, as soon as the lecturer starts it is basically 50 minutes listening to them. Lecturers may get you to talk with those around you for certain concepts so that can help a bit. But, once the lecture is over you can probably chat for a coiple more minutes then it's off to your own probably different classes (unless you are in those distinct cohorts like Biomed where everyone does the same subjects).
As tiredandstressed has said labs and tutorials are where it is easiest as it is a classroom-type environment just like high school and it usually invovles students actually doing things rather than just listening.

Whoopsie my bad I guess it did help that we all were doing the same subjects that is probably why I met most of the friends in lectures, guess it not the same for other courses :(
O-Week (as well as WK 1-2) also has a lot of activities where you can meet new people, try joining a club where you'll find people with similar interests as you!
